http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1545095 (Original Thread)
With the Incarna expansion, the original 'Basic Training' tutorial known as 'Crash Course' was updated and changed into - Aura NPE (New Player Experience) Tutorial.
Along with that change, 60 different Event Agents (15 per Faction) known as Tutorial Agents were forced into early retirement due to Aura NPE who has single handedly ended 'The Endless Battle' mission.
'The Endless Battle' (2-part mission)
This used to be the new players very first 'real' mission which could only be completed once per agent in the life of the character. Part 1 was a simple Encounter mission against a single NPC which when destroyed, would drop a small specific item to be returned to Agent. Part 2 was a simple Courier mission to transport a small specific item to a nearby Solar system.
A small amount of Corporation and Faction standing incurred for completing that. The Agent would then refer players to 1 of 60 (15 per Faction) Career Agents for more advanced training on the various careers available.
Basically, the incorrectly named 'Tutorial Agents' didn't give any instruction or information to new players other than refer them to the Career Agents. The old 'Tutorial Agents' were actually Political Liaisons for their specific Faction. Those 60 Agents were a good source for gaining a 1 time Faction standing increase.
I propose 2 different options for the 60 Tutorial Agents (15 per Faction) and their mission 'The Endless Battle', 1 simple and 1 complex.
Option 1 (simple): Bring the old 'Tutorial Agents' back out of retirement and change their Title to 'Political Agents'. Have them continue offering 'The Endless Battle' mission with a slight change to their ending dialog so they don't refer players to the Career Agents (Currently done by Aura NPE).
Option 2 (complex): Have the new 'Political Agents' (15 per Faction) split up into 5 different Agent levels, 3 Agents per level from level 1 to level 5. Have them all offer 'The Endless Battle' mission series but have the mission difficultly and reward increased to match the higher Agent levels.
These new 'Political Agents' and their mission offers can only be completed once per Agent in the life of the player's character, just like the old 'Tutorial Agents'.
The code is already written and with some slight programming, Option 1 could be implemented very easily. Option 2 would of course take a little more time and work to implement but is still doable.
Thank you all for taking the time to read this proposal.

No, I think the mission you're referring to was in one of the Career Agents 10 part mission series, which was later changed.
The old 'Tutorial' Agents 2 part mission series didn't involve much travel. Part 1 was an encounter in the same system as the agent. Part 2 was a courier to the system next door.
All of those agents were located in either 1.0 or 0.9 high security systems, most were deadend systems. None of them ever had any low security systems enroute.
As I stated in the original post, CCP has replaced those agents with the new tutorial (Aura NPE), which doesn't give any Faction standing increase.

Good question.
Like I said, when the Aura NPE Tutorial was implemented, she replaced all 60 agents who offered 'The Endless Battle' mission. The strange thing about that is there's only 3 career agent systems and 3 spawn systems (where new players enter Eve) for each of the 4 main Factions.
That accounts for 24 of the 60 original old Tutorial agent locations. I was informed that the other locations did have an Aura agent but they weren't active. Maybe they're active now, I don't know. I was also informed that the actual idea was to allow players to repeat the Aura NPE Tutorial if needed. However, players can do that anytime via Eve Help (F12 - Tutorials). Still doesn't explain the other 36 agents or the removal of 'The Endless Battle' missions. |

Thanks for the support of this proposal.
Buzzy Warstl is correct. I checked a couple of stations where the old 'Tutorial Agents' used to be located and now those stations are indeed empty, Aura NPE had originally replaced them and now Aura isn't even there anymore.
I don't see any reason not to reinstate the old 'Tutorial Agents' and change their title to 'Political Agents'.

Kaeoz wrote:Maybe next year those Agents get some CCP love. Yeah, would be nice. There's also other agents that need looked at as well.
Cosmos agents - need to display the correct standing requirement for access in their agent info. They should also issue a warning message to players stating if mission is declined, it won't be offered again. That message should appear with a yes/no option each time a player 'declines' a cosmos mission offer...
Avrue Auz - agent listed on the Certificate gained at Gallente Data Centers, gives players an item, Avrue's Token, for completing her missions, that item is supposed to be given to another agent, Boismevier Mals, for continuing the chain..However, that agent isn't available thus the chain is broken, er unfinished.
Patch notes for Apocrypha, released 10 March 2009 :
Quote:Agent Boismevier Mals is still missing despite a massive manhunt by DED. Avrues token has now been edited and will remove any mention of Boismevier. The search for this missing agent will continue in every known pleasure hub until we get our man! Item description for Avrue's Token now :
Quote:This token might be of value in the future, so hold on to it. Jeremy Tacs - 1 of 2 Concord Agents left in game that offers a mission for security status increase. That mission offer was recently deactivated due to a bug allowing players to farm his mission.
Cosmos BPC's - these need to be redone, such as lowering the amount of special materials required that's listed on the BPC's or at least make those special materials more readily available
Storyline modules - these need to have their attributes increased to correctly represent their Meta Level. As it is right now, most Storyline modules are equal to Meta Level 3 modules yet the Storyline modules are listed as Meta Level 6 or 7.
Anyway, there's other issues as well. The Event Agents, their missions and their rewards definitely need some CCP love and attention. |

I understand your situation and agree that the game basically places you into the deep end with no direction after the level 1 SoE Epic Arc.
For a good story plot within this game you might want to check out some of the other Event Agents. I have most of them listed in 'The Plan' along with some tips and guide links.
Try not to get discouraged. This game get's a lot better after you've put in some time.

Sugar Kyle wrote:When it comes to things like expanding the burner missions we've asked as well. When it comes to the tutorial missions, CCP Rise gave a good presentation at how they are working to bring players in and get them informed without a bunch of theme park style missions that don't prepare them for the game. Eve Vegas 2014 - The New Player Experience When it comes to bringing back old content some things are more broken then others but the PvE team has been working towards this area. More missions are always good. We need better then what we have and better accessibility. Escalations where just fixed for Phoebe for instance. However, Eve's old mission mechanics are poor to be kind. Thanks for looking at this proposal and taking the time to reply. This proposal is not intended to replace or even be remotely related to the NPE.
This proposal is about bringing back and expanding on content that was previously available in the game. Content that worked great and could have been easily updated instead of being removed from the game.
Each of the original 60 'Tutorial Agents' (wrongly named) were retired and replaced by the Aura NPE Agent. After a short while Aura NPE became the 'Meet & Greet' Tutorial in the Captains Quarters. The Aura NPE Agents, located in the various stations previously occupied by the wrongly named original 'Tutorial Agents', were then removed.
Now all of those stations are empty and lonely, located in dead-end systems that players rarely ever visit. Reviving and expanding the original content could help make those systems more active by offering more PvE content for everyone, both new and veteran player alike.
These new 'Political Agents' could even offer Burner Missions, however that's a topic for another thread.

Jin'taan wrote:It's in my opinion that you've poorly highlighted the problem, and focused on the solution. Your issue is that standings are currently difficult to attain and manage, as you are proposing a way to make it easier (rather than highlighting 'interesting content' with regards to PvE that has been removed). Standings and how they work are something we would like to look at, especially given the amount of Alpha players who are going into FW and not realising the impact that this has on their standings until far later into the game.
This is especially relevant given the way standings work with the new mining convoys, which are something I think represents a huge step forwards in using standings more actively in gameplay.
Also please don't sign your forum posts. You aren't sending a letter to us. There's an old saying - Opinions are like arseholes, everybody has one, some just stink more than others.
If you had bothered to read the proposal with an open mind, you would have seen I clearly stated the problem which is the original content previously known as Tutorial Agents had been removed by CCP and replaced with the NPE Aura Tutorial. A little while later the NPC Aura Tutorial was removed and the 60 stations that were home to the incorrectly named Tutorial Agents became empty, resulting in a major loss of activity in those systems.
Also you couldn't be more wrong when you say my issue with standings is that they are difficult to attain and manage. Obviously you're not familiar with 'The Plan' which I created and gave to the Eve playerbase back in 2010.
As for new Alpha players, I totally agree that not knowing the impact of standings can easily mess up their gameplay options. This proposal can actually help them resolve that issue.

I always do because yes, I AM sending a letter to you m
I agree 100% and I couldn't have said it better myself. The only thing I can add is that I'm not actually signing my forum posts since that would require a signature. I just initial them which makes it a bit more personal.

Jin'taan wrote:DeMichael Crimson wrote:If you had bothered to read the proposal with an open mind, you would have seen I clearly stated the problem which is the original content previously known as Tutorial Agents had been removed by CCP and replaced with the NPE Aura Tutorial. A little while later the NPC Aura Tutorial was removed and the 60 stations that were home to the incorrectly named Tutorial Agents became empty, resulting in a major loss of activity in those systems. I did read your post, hence why I tried to articulate what your issue was and address it. Please try not to conflate misunderstanding your point with not reading it. The problem I have is that you have not elaborated on why these agents are necesary and what the costs of removing them were to the game. You noted that the benefit of them was that they gave a standings increase, and this is something that I understood as a problem within the game, so I addressed it. You didn't say that you enjoyed the missions, so I assumed that the PvE content itself was not the draw, leaving only the standings impact as a benefit to the playerbase as highlighted by you. DeMichael Crimson wrote:resulting in a major loss of activity in those systems. This in particular is something I do not understand as a 'downside'. There are plenty of underused systems in the game, especially in Hisec. Why is this a concern that needs to be addressed from a gameplay standpoint? I'm not being facetious here, I genuinely would like to know, as it's not a conversation I've had before. These Agents are Event Agents which could only be completed once in the life of the character for Faction standing increase. They were important due to the fact that there was 15 of them for each of the 4 main Empires which made it easy for players to regain Faction standing. Their original 2 part mission series was actually quite easy to complete which contributed to them being important in regards to Faction standing increase.
The main problem is that they were never really listed or publicized like regular Agents and they were situated in the last system of dead-end pipelines with no other Agents, thus they didn't get much activity. Since they've been removed and the fact that no other Agents are located in those dead-end systems basically turns those systems into unused content that's a waste of server resources.

Most players didn't even know they existed until I published my first draft of 'The Plan'.

No, I get your point and yes, I agree that the process of standings repair could be better implemented within the client to be more intuitive. However CCP doesn't like to present things in Black & White. They prefer various shades of Gray and enjoy seeing the player base figure things out on their own. CCP distributes the content throughout the game for players to find and put the pieces together. Players then share that info with the community. That's what makes this game great.
A full re-work of the standings system would require a lot of Dev time and resources, not to mention it would probably remove a lot of the existing PvE content, mainly Event Agents. I never liked the idea of Tags for Security and I definitely don't like the idea of implementing Tags for Standing. That makes it way too easy for players to circumvent consequences for their actions.
All of the empty systems that were formerly occupied by those removed Agents may not be a drain on the server but it's definitely a waste of time and effort invested by the Dev's who had originally created that content. When those Agents were active a small percentage of the player base actually engaged with that content, thus validating the resources used to create that content.
My proposal is to not only bring those Agents out of retirement but to also improve and upgrade their content for the benefit of all Capsuleers. They could be classified and listed as Political Agents in the games Agent Finder. They could even be coded similar to the Epic Arcs, available to be redone once a year which would be very beneficial in repairing and maintaining positive Faction standings.
I understand this content may seem outdated and worthless to you but aside from doing a full standings rework, this proposal would be very easy to implement resulting in more content for all players to interact with in-game. Anyway, I sincerely thank you for taking the time to review this proposal and more importantly, for taking the time to discuss it with me.

Jin'taan wrote:No worrries, thank you for being willing to engage me in debate here and not flip out when I took a different stance. I'll definitely bring this up in our next meeting with CCP and ask if this was made as a design decision or as a consequence of simply purging a lot of previous content to replace it with the Inception NPE. Hopefully from there I'll be able to talk to CCP about it further. Obviously, no promises of action, as I've said before, the CSM doesn't have the power to direct workflow, and whilst you might expect it to be just flicking a switch to bring the agents back, chances are that a lot of background engineering would have to be done to add new agent finder filters, reimplementing the mission pool, without disturbing the existing tutorial path.
Thank you very much for offering to use this proposal as a base topic to confer with CCP. That in itself is a major accomplishment and I don't expect anything more. I do realize CCP has been looking at Faction standings with plans to rework the game mechanic governing it. Even if CCP does like this idea or any aspect of it, I don't expect to see any results happen quickly. I know it takes a lot of time and resources for Dev's to code, test and implement content into the game.
Once again thank you for reviewing this proposal and discussing the overall value of it with me. I wish you much success in your career as a CSM member.

Hopefully this proposal has been noticed by the new CSM to help them give CCP some ideas for future changes to PvE.
